    Hi, I appreciate your site and magazine like crazy. Would you please tell me which brands of multi-vitamins are the best. I am a 72 year old female writer. (But i look and act much younger.) My dietary habits are great. But enough about me. I await your sage advice. Gail Plotkin

      Try Country Life or New Chapter, both are as good as multiples get. You might also look into taking some of the items separately, such as minerals as the molecule size is large and pills need to be quite large to get a beneficial dose. There are also fillers in solid tabs and caplets that aren’t in capsules. Just some things to think about. Best to make friends with someone you trust at a local natural foods store. Good luck.     folic acid is necessary for pregnant women but it may cause breast cancer so instead of putting it in most food why not have pregnant women take a supplement when they are with child?

      From Nutrition Action Heathletter: It’s essential that a woman consume an adequate amount of folic acid before becoming pregnant. She can’t wait until she knows she pregnant to start taking a supplement. According to the CDC, birth defects of the brain and spine (anencephaly and spina bifida) happen in the first few weeks of pregnancy, often before a woman finds out she’s pregnant. Also, half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. These are two reasons why it is important for all women who can get pregnant to be sure to get 400 mcg of folic acid every day, even if they aren’t planning a pregnancy any time soon. By the time a woman realizes she’s pregnant, it might be too late to prevent these birth defects. In the first few years after the mandatory fortification of grains with folic acid, birth defects of the brain and spine declined by about 25 percent.

    Can l have honey in tea and coffee or is it too much sugar?

      From the Nutrition Action Healthletter: A teaspoon of honey has 6 grams of sugar and about 21 calories. A teaspoon of sugar has 4 grams of sugar and 16 calories. So, both are small amounts.

    I’ve read that women shouldn’t take a multi, and I believe the reason centered around the folic acid contained therein. What is the recommended dose of folic acid for women? I am 71 years old.

      From Nutrition Action Healthletter: Multivitamins can be an inexpensive insurance policy to make sure we get all the nutrients we need. But you’ll never know whether you really needed them. That’s why it’s important not to overpay. You can get a good nultivitamin for about 10 cents a day.

      The recommended amount of folic acid is 400 micrograms a day, the amount found in most multis. Researchers have worried that too much folic acid — more than 1,000 micrograms a day — might be harmful, but the most recent studies indicate that it’s not a problem. Still, there’s no advantage to getting more than 400 micrograms a day.

      And of course, women who could become pregnant should be taking this much folic acid every day to lower the risk of certain birth defects.

    how much magnesium at age 89 should i be taking?

      From Nutrition Action Healthletter: The recommendation for magnesium is the same for all adults 31 years and older: 320 mg a day for women, 420 mg for men. Here’s a link to more information about magnesium from the National Institutes of Health:

    Cant believe you recommend Country Life. Even their calcium supplements do not past a simple
    test we can do. Is supplement ‘elemental calcium? Then test it in a small glass of slightly warm vinegar. Stir occasionally. If it dissolves within 30 min. it should dissolve in your stomach. The
    last time I tested Country Life Calcium, it didn’t dissolve, so I used another brand.

    Why do people feel they need to take a pill to help their health?! If you talk to people who are over 100 yrs old, none of them take supplements! They eat healthy (organic) and drink a lot of tap water. :-) If you want to be healthier get out and move around: be it gardening, walking, or whatever !!! YMMV.
